Abstract

In the first paper of this issue, Strydom and Viviers discuss the rising Global value chains (GVCs) as a means of improving the growth prospects of South Africa. The authors identify the reliance on locally-sourced resources, a low value-added fabrication industrial policy and an export-reliant trade policy to limit South Africa's participation in the GVCs.
