n AfricaGrowth Agenda - Weather micro-insurance and the support of low-income and vulnerable communities. The case of the island of Mauritius

Volume 2014, Issue 7
  • ISSN : 1811-5187

The article investigates whether the island of Mauritius could support the welfare of its vulnerable and low-income quintile against the uncertainty of losses due to the increasing trend in severe weather hazards and inadequate government allocated support schemes through the development of weather micro-insurance. For a win-win situation, the respondents agreed that a luring policy should be introduced and could compensate them financially and also the government could mitigate its mounting economic losses during irregular weather-related losses. For an effective product design to prevail amongst others, it would be wise to involve the targeted niche in its development process.
