Abstract

Africa is the world's second-largest continent in both area and population, after Eurasia. At about 30,244,050 square km, including its adjacent islands, it covers 20.3% of the total land area on Earth, and with over 850 million human inhabitants in 53 countries, it accounts for about one-seventh of the world's human population. The development challenge facing Africa is enormous, but it can be overcome. The continent urgently needs a rapid, sustained and broad-based economic transformation that is equitable within and across generations. Countries with developing economies have become major players in the global economy.
