Abstract

In December 2010 China invited South Africa to join BRIC. The creation of BRIC[S] is symbolic of a shift in global economic power away from the developed Group of 7 (G7) and Group of 20 (G20) (traditionally western) economies, towards the developing world and emerging economies (the global South and Asia). Political and economic analysts have pointed out that the invitation was a strategic political move rather than one based on economic facts and figures.
