Abstract

The Small Micro and Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) sector plays a key role in Africa's economic development. It is estimated that the sector provides more than 90% of employment and over 60% of GDP. Despite the significance of the sector, very little attention is paid to SMME development in the continent. The sector is over-taxed and over-regulated. In most African countries, over 70% of the tax revenue comes from SMMEs. Despite this, African SMMEs continue to perform reasonable well in job creation and profitability.
