Rwanda is a relatively small landlocked country, bordering Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Uganda. In 1994, underlying tribal tensions between the Hutu / Tutsi majority / minority culminated in a violent genocide that resulted in the killing of about a million people within 3 months and an extensive destruction of political, economic and social institutions.
