The launch of SADC FTA in 2008 marked an important step towards deeper regional economic integration. However, it has to achieve a customs union by 2010, common market by 2015, SADC Monetary Union by 2016 and ultimately a common currency by 2018 (see figure 1 below). However an important question is: what progress has SADC made thus far towards achieving economic integration in Southern Africa and what challenges threaten achievement of deeper regional economic integration in SADC? This paper aims at discussing the progress towards achieving regionalism in Southern Africa to date and challenges that lie ahead.
