Abstract

The exceptionally complex forces operating within and upon Southern African society make it virtually impossible to understand the direction social and political change could take in that part of the world if the theorist chooses to focus his attention too narrowly on one aspect of the matter. In this paper, which I realise must be controversial by any standard and will probably satisfy no specialist, I have sketched several aspects of the problem: the historical, the psychological-cultural, the economic and the international - more specifically inter-African-aspects, amongst others.
