Abstract

The explicit and visible function of formal schooling is to transmit knowledge and skills by means of classroom instruction and to allocate those trained to appropriate employment. Schools, however, have a wider function in that they are vehicles of social mobility and also the setting where students learn broad principles of social conduct.
