Abstract

The major theme of this paper is suggested by oral traditions collected from the clans of the Doe, Kwere and Zaramo peoples of Eastern Tanzania. For the history of the areas in which these peoples lived during the nineteenth century is presented in oral tradition as essentially an ensemble of clan histories through which run certain common themes and related cultural and structural concepts.
