Abstract

Nobody can deny that the building af better rural water supplies greatly improves the living conditions of the peasants. The aims of such supplies are an important policy issue: who should get them first, how important are rural water supplies in relation to other development items, and what standards should be applied, such as water quality, distance from the house, etc. This paper attempts to analyze the process of implementation of the rural water-supply programme on the Tanzanian mainland.
