Abstract

Zaire has, in common with other developing countries, the typical postindependence mechanisms of underdevelopment in agriculture, foreign investment, and the formation of an auxiliary African capitalism alongside foreign capital. But many of these problems are particularly severe in Zaire, where the Belgians did shockingly little to prepare Africans to run their own country.
