Abstract

Col Muammar al-Gaddafi, Libyan Head of State, has become one of the most controversial leaders in Africa. At the age of 27 he engineered the coup which brought him to power and since then he has not only firmly stamped his influence on Libyan life, but has also made an impact on political developments in Saharan Africa and the Middle East. In this article B J Olivier, currently doing his MA degree in international politics at the University of Pretoria, sketches the life of Col Gaddafi and analyses the beliefs which have motivated his actions.
