Abstract

Rene Dumont, eminent French agronomist and author of several books, among them False start in Africa and The hungry future, completed a survey on rural development in Zambia for President Kaunda earlier this year. Dumont, a committed socialist, lays the blame for the failure of rural development in Zambia on the Western system inherited by Zambia, and also found much to criticise in the execution of administrative procedures and the monopolistic nature of the parastatal marketing organisations. In this article Dr H S Schoeman, Researcher at the Africa Institute, traces the development of modern agriculture in Zambia and examines the report.
