Abstract

Since independence in 1960 Ivory Coast has experienced phenomenal economic progress and has been called an ""island of prosperity in a sea of poverty"". The government has encouraged a market economy and investment from abroad, while entering the industrial sector through state corporations. Predominantly an agricultural country, however, Ivory Coast has succeeded where many other African countries have failed, namely in expanding food production and the cultivation of a variety of export crops.
