The Kingdom of Lesotho is one of Africa's three remaining monarchies, While the king of Morocco wields real power and Swaziland is currently ruled by a regent, the king of Lesotho is the continent's sole titular monarch. The people of Lesotho are known as the Basotho or South Sotho, Their literary rate is among the highest in Africa and the majority of them are Christians. Although culturally homogeneous, the Basotho are almost evenly divided between the Protestant and Roman Catholic faiths, In general. the influence of Protestantism appears strongest in the densely-populated lowlands along the Caledon River, where most of the 1,5 million inhabitants live, while Catholicism pre-dominate in the mountains which expand over almost 60% of the total surface area, French and Swiss Protestant missionaries have been working in the country since 1833 and founded the mission which became known as the Lesotho Evangelical Church, The Roman Catholics founded their first mission in 1862 at Roma where the National University of Lesotho is now situated,
