Abstract

Africa is unique in the contemporary world. it has a population growth rate that continues to rise. Growth rates in all the other main regions have slowed down to below 2,5 per cent per annum. Africa's growth rate has accelerated from 2.7 per cent during the period 1970 to 1975 to a current 3 per cent. Kenya's population growth rate is believed to exceed 4 per cent and the International Monetary Fund recently predicted that Zimbabwe could follow suit. Yet the bulk of Africa's current population of 362 million continues to live in a contraceptive vacuum and no more than 5 per cent of the female ""at risk"" population have been exposed to a family planning programme.
