Abstract

Swaziland's withdrawal from the Rand Monetary Area (RMA) is a move calculated to blunt the deleterious consequences of linking its currency to an increasingly unpredictable rand. Swaziland's decision to untie the lilangeni from the rand stems from a growing awareness that the value of the latter is now closely tied to South African political developments, which bear no relation to Swaziland's economic needs. Although Swaziland will never be able to break completely free of South Africa's economic pull, the prospects for sustained economic growth appear brighter outside the RMA.
