Abstract

The teacher - Mwalimu President Julius Nyerere - retired from the leadership of Tanzania last year, a man still respected for his extraordinary personal integrity and regarded by many as the moral leader of Africa and possibly even of the Third World. His philosophy of African socialism, which stresses co-operation between people rather than conflict (as in the Western ""scientific socialisms""), his rigorous opposition to bureaucratic corruption, his stress on the peasantry and his experiment with agrarian socialism, and his constant refusal of personal wealth have attracted worldwide attention and controversy. The consistently moral tone of his political philosophies, paired with an absence of cynicism in his own conduct, has placed him in sharp contrast to other African leaders.
