""Every woman has the right to a career. Every woman has the right to bear children. But no woman has the right to expect society (sic) to help her do both.""1 The above statement assumes that women always have a choice between a career and having children. The fact is that only 23 per cent of white South African households are nuclear households, where the mother wants to stay home caring for the children while father brings home the money. About 30 per cent of white women have to work for financial reasons and about 18 per cent choose to have careers.2
