Abstract

As a programme of political action, the black consciousness movement has been forced to surrender its place at centre stage and to occupy a more modest position in the wings. But that does not mean that it has been consigned to obscurity or that it will not be able to recapture a central role for itself. The chief organizational vehicle for black consciousness today is the Azanian People's Organization (Azapo). It does not loom as large an extra-parliamentary opposition force as its predecessor, the now outlawed Black People's Convention (BPC), did a decade ago.
