Abstract

At present, South Africa's interaction with the rest of Africa is beset with political tensions. Yet, at the same time, mutually beneficial ties in respect of trade, transport, and other material interests are flourishing, especially with neighbouring countries. The problems afflicting African agriculture account for a substantial part of the continent's developmental and political difficulties. Hence, before considering present as well as future interaction, a sketch of the outstanding features of agriculture in Africa generally, and in South Africa's neighbouring countries in particular, is presented.
