Abstract

The National Party has scored its tenth consecutive general election victory and can look forward to celebrating its fortieth year in power on 26 May next year. This is a remarkable performance with few parallels. Does it mean the National Party can be expected to rule for many decades still, or is it entering its period of decline? This would be difficult to predict if one were to look only at the statistical picture over the last four decades - there is only one clear message and that is that the distortion brought about by our electoral system makes it quite possible for a party with only forty per cent of the vote to get a clear majority of seats in the House of Assembly.
