Abstract

The quest for a broadly acceptable socio-economic system is emerging as a crucial feature of the debate on South Africa's future political order. Nelson Mandela's reaffirmation, shortly after his release from prison, that his organization is firmly committed to the nationalization of banks, mines and ""monopoly industries"" has led to a flood of arguments for and against. South Africa is one of the few countries where a high percentage of socialist believers is still to be found. Hopefully most of them will sooner or later realize the economically damaging consequences of nationalization.
