Abstract

The East African states inherited on independence a legal system derived from two main sources - the law of England and the customary laws of the area concerned.* This dual system of law had its counterpart in the dual system of courts - the High Courts and magistrates' courts on the one hand and the native courts on the other - and something must first be said of how these systems originated and operated during the colonial period.
