Since then knowledge about the traditional cultures of the peoples of Mo�ambique has increased because these cultures, contrary to the opinions generally expressed, are frequently very complex. This notable increase in information has been due not only to the work of anthropologists and ethno-historians, qualified anthropologists and historians, but also to the work of interested people such as doctors, agronomists, missionaries and administrative officials who, through their professional activities, live in close contact with the rural population. Thus, I feel that it is opportune to revise the work quoted above so as to include in it new material which has been gathered, to give it a more historical perspective and, in short, to change in some way the groupings which were suggested earlier.
