Abstract

When the culture traits of an African ethnic group are enumerated a particular type of rural settlement pattern is usually included in the list of characteristics. Most settlements, however, are not static phenomena which can be catalogued and ascribed to one society or another. Instead, settlement form is a dynamic component of the landscape with a strong proclivity toward regularized, predictable modifications.
