This paper evaluates international scientific collaboration between universities by means of a case study. The educational project, 'Spatial transformations in post-apartheid South Africa', jointly developed a website for self-guided e-learning for different target groups. The project was financed by the Flemish government, but it is clear from this experience that financial resources are only a (necessary) incentive and that any success achieved must be attributed to the personal commitment of the members of the project team. The basis for the project was established by a series of bilateral collaboration and exchange agreements between the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, and a number of South African universities, including the University of the Free State and the University of Stellenbosch. In this article, the authors share their experience, not only by presenting the project and the website, but also by focusing on considerations, motives and incentives that were taken into account before starting the project. The focus is on the results of assessments and further collaboration after the completion of the project.
