Abstract

If the end of the Cold War raised hopes for a new world order whose hallmarks were going to be peace, stability and development, 9/11 shattered that hope. While catastrophic events like 9/11 legitimately evoke a sense of piety, such a response tends to becloud the reason necessary for their proper understanding. Just as the Nazi-perpetrated holocaust was by many scholars narrowly conceptualised as a senseless act, thereby failing to appreciate its historical rootedness in early European history, many post-9/11 commentaries are guilty of such a historicity and piety-driven scholarship.
