Abstract

Higher education in developing countries is facing a series of challenges. In Nigeria, these challenges are multifaceted, but one dimension that has attracted some attention is the phenomenon of secret cultism. While there are several commentaries, few of these are either systematic nor scholarly. This paper is an attempt to rise to this challenge by attempting a systematic analysis based on an appropriate theoretical basis that can lead us to developing appropriate theoretical insight into this phenomenon. This is with a view to developing an empirical approach that will further add to scholarly understanding and much desired recommendations for solutions. This is therefore the first part of a two-phased study of an emergent sociological problem in Nigerian higher education.
