Abstract

Finally, some good news from the Western think-tanks: according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), African economies are growing at a record rate. The report on Africa's Economic Outlook indicates that average growth across the continent was more than 5% in 2004, the highest growth in eight years. While this does not really merit the kind of excitement generated in some media - reporting the statistic accurately, if a little optimistically, as the "highest growth rate this century" - it is indeed cause for celebration and a sense of achievement.
