Abstract

The article explores a literary journal, as a site for interrogating new forms of narration that depict current socio-cultural and political conditions of Kenya. By experimenting with electronic mails, using the Sheng language (a mixture of Swahili, English and ethnic languages), and adopting of a distinctly Kenyan matatu (taxi) culture, the article shows how transfers social and cultural meanings to literary texts in order to create an understanding of everyday life. Yet, despite its apparent fluidity, the article also points out a degree of rigidity around the journal under its editorial gaze.
