n Africa Insight - Breaking the chains : female bonding and cultural emancipation in an emergent urban space in Kenya

Volume 35, Issue 1
  • ISSN : 0256-2804

This article is a reading of Oludhe Macgoye's and Genga- Idowu's in an attempt to show how the two writers use fiction to revise society's perception of romance and marriage. Macgoye and Genga-Idowu suggest that women can have fruitful relationships between themselves without having to form permanent bonds with men for sexual and material satisfaction. In the two texts, migration of women to towns and their subsequent involvement in prostitution becomes a project of self-emancipation and empowerment, which helps women to break cultural "chains" brought about by the marriage bond that allegedly subordinates them.
