Abstract

This special issue of Africa Insight brings together a wide range of ground-breaking studies on East African popular culture and literature. There is continuing work by seasoned scholars in the areas of culture and literary practice. There is also fascinating work from committed young researchers who are helping to open up new areas of scholarship in the field of popular culture in the region. The volume covers the plethora of genres in the field in papers that use popular culture to engage with questions of post-colonial realities, evolving urban identities, and the idea of popular culture as democratic space - as an alternative site in which artists and their audiences articulate politics away from officially regulated zones and practices.
