Abstract

This paper examines the role of tourism in Mozambique, a country that emerged from civil war in 1992. In terms of reconstruction, the national government has adopted a development approach, which includes an embrace of tourism as a vehicle for development and the private sector as the driver for this sector. Key themes of concern are the reasons that national government is pursuing tourism development, the current status of the tourism industry and issues and discussions around tourism planning and direction of development.
