Abstract

Entrepreneurship in rural tourism has attracted only limited research. This article examines the problems and challenges of developing rural tourism enterprises in the remote region of South Africa's Wild Coast. It is argued that rural tourism in South Africa is dominated numerically by a host of 'marginal' entrepreneurs, many of which are informal sector tourism enterprises and functioning at the barest levels of survival. The immense challenges of upgrading the livelihoods of these marginal tourism entrepreneurs across South Africa merits the policy attention of national, provincial and local tiers of government.
