Abstract

Data were collected from a stratified multistage sample survey of 204 farmers in three districts of Gikongoro province, Rwanda. Some of the respondents were supported by the Development Activity Programme (DAP). A system of equations relating farm, household and farmer characteristics to investment in operating inputs and to potato yield was estimated. Results indicate that area cultivated, liquidity, family size and farmer's age all impact positively on investment in operating inputs, which in turn has a positive impact on potato yield. DAP should be targeted more selectively, focusing on the farm size, education, family size and liquidity profile of farmer association members.
