Abstract

In the introductory chapter of this volume, the editor, Vishnu Padayachee, states, rightly so, that during the first five years of South African democracy, a great deal of energy went into getting the development model right. He refers to the francophone experience of development economics ranging from orthodox policies and alternative development models, as well as the South African decade of liberation from 1985 to 1995. He contends that these traditions played an important role in shaping South African development policy today, but admits that the African National Congress (ANC) and its alliance partners are now all pushing their own agendas.
