Elections have been held in six of the Bantu Homelands of South Africa. Although in most cases these were not contested on a party political basis, the formation of political parties followed soon after the elections in almost all the Homelands. This article will give a review of the election issues as well as the differing policies adopted by the political parties concerned. At present there are 13 major political parties in the Homelands. In three of the Homelands - Gazankulu, Swazi and Basotho-Qwaqwa - political parties have not yet been formed. At least two parties were operating in each of the Homelands of the Transkei, Bophuthatswana, the Ciskei and Venda. There were also two parties in both Lebowa and KwaZulu, but these recently decided to merge. No elections have been held in KwaZulu yet.
