Abstract

""The complex process of change, which has been variously termed development, growth and modernization, is the outcome of the complex interaction of several forces. Although changes in each of the economic, social, political, demographic, and psychological elements are necessary, it is the provision of a transportation infrastructure and the concomitant easing of movement, as well as the focussing of economic, activity and human organization in new urban centers which are the most decisive factors. .... It is the transport network and the urban hierarchy which bind together the disparate regions of the country; it is along the railway and roads and through the towns that the money economy with all its developmental implications spreads.
