Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between global migration flows and development issues in the context of various migration theories. The focus is on international migration patterns of persons traversing national borders, from which just over a third of migrants move from the developing world to the developed world. The paper acknowledges the movement within borders which by conservative estimates is 740 million people, almost four times international migrants. The paper makes inference to the past, present and potential future trends of both legal and illegal migrants.
