Abstract

The developmental impact of African diaspora communities on African countries is a growing subject of discussion in both academic and policy platforms. However, this tends to be generally limited to cash transfers that African migrants remit to Africa. While this is a significant form of foreign direct investment, especially to poor countries, this article argues that the developmental role of African diaspora communities in sending countries is much more diverse and complex than the story of remittances. Drawing on the literature on expatriate communities as wealth-creating and developmental networks, and based on the analysis of group dynamics in African diaspora communities in Europe and Oceania, this article suggests that African diaspora communities are assuming a greater role in the fight against poverty and underdevelopment in sending countries.
