Abstract

In 2007, the world consumed an estimated 18 trillion kWh, from which an estimated 3.6 trillion kWh were generated from renewable resources. In 2030, an estimated usage of 31 trillion kWh is projected, from which an estimated 20 trillion kWh will be generated from renewable resources. The availability and therefore usage of electricity differs geographically. Today, 54 million Americans use electricity equivalent to that of 109 million Europeans or 950 million Africans. This article evaluates the possibility of supplying electricity to all Africans by 2030, generated from renewable resources. Furthermore, it evaluates the opportunity to export "green" electricity to Europe.
