Abstract

Every philosophical system, no matter what claims it makes for itself, must derive its authenticity from self-examination. It does not ultimately matter whether this meta-philosophical exercise is conclusively resolved. The question of what African philosophy is, in contrast to any other kind of philosophy, is one that permits no simple answer, and the attempt to answer it has produced two distinct discursive formations - those of universalists and traditionalists.
