Abstract

The article examines how W.F. Knobel Hospital is implementing the National Core Standards. Data was collected through interviewing 30 line managers who are responsible for implementing the National Core Standards. Data analysis was done based on the information gathered by the researcher and secondary sources obtained from literature. The findings indicate that line managers at W.F. Knobel hospital do not follow available policies and guidelines when implementing the National Core Standards. The implementation of the National Core Standards in hospitals is not done in a proper way. As a result patient care is compromised as the Standards serve as a basis for quality care. Line managers should be equipped with basic knowledge regarding the process of implementing the National Core Standards, using available policies and guidelines; and the monitoring and evaluation of departments regarding their implementation of the Standards should be done regularly.
