is the product of a public dialogue series hosted at the University of the Free State's Centre for Africa Studies to mark the centenary of the African National Congress (ANC). Far from reproducing a triumphalist narrative of the ANC's accomplishments over the past hundred years, the volume contributes to a range of critical literatures, emphasising that, for South Africa, like the rest of the continent, liberation from a white minority regime has not marked 'the end of history'. As the contributors highlight from different disciplinary perspectives, South Africa's present is unfolding in relationship to complex and contradictory historical processes that bear heavily on the country's most successful liberation movement and current ruling party. And these processes should be examined carefully if South Africans and others wish to shape an uncertain future.
