n Africa Insight - The Accidental Public Servant, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai : book review

Volume 44 Number 4
  • ISSN : 0256-2804

This is one of the most detailed and informative autobiographies to be published in Nigeria in over a decade; and it is a welcome addition to the growing literature on politics and governance in contemporary Nigeria. The publication of the book was greeted by a storm of reaction from ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and his deputy, Atiku Abubakar; former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu; and ex-Governor Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State, among many others. The book was variously described as 'fiction for self-glorification', containing 'half-truths, exaggeration and reflection of selective memory', characterised by a 'huge integrity deficit' and written by someone with a 'notorious reputation for disparaging religions and their icons'.
