It is probably true to say that the system of migratory contract labour and its effects on Black family life is one of the most emotive and contentious socio-political issues facing South Africa. The harmful effects of this system are widely documented (Wilson, 1972), and it is worth noting that criticism of the system has not been limited to opponents of the policy of separate development.
