Abstract

This article attempts to sketch the more significant reasons for the high rate of wage increases, as well as the consequences rapidly rising in comes have had on African economies. It also outlines certain policies different governments have pursued in recent years in their attempt to curtail the high rate of wage increases. Minimum-wage fixing as instrument to increase the well-being and wealth of the lower-income groups is also briefly examined.
