Abstract

The Third United Nations Law of the Sea Conference has met for six lengthy sessions. The completion of a convention, however, still lies in the future. The negotiations are to a considerable degree ideologically coloured and it is consequently all the more difficult to reach a compromise. This applies particularly to the problems of deep-sea mining, straits and territorial limits, economic zones, continental shelves and marine research. If the Conference should fail, unilateral measures on the part of many states can be anticipated.
